Cold composting
Cold composting is the composting of vegetable waste from the kitchen or garden and grass clippings. Vegetable waste contains more water than yard trimmings. This extra moisture greatly lowers the decomposition process and the battery temperature stays cooler, hence the term cold composting. Composting piles containing moisture usually contain a large number of redworms and insect larvae. Common Redworms sometimes added to the compost pile to help the decomposition process.
Insects in your compost Heap
There are a number of different insects that live in batteries cold compost containing plant material. The presence of these insects is positive, as it helps in the decomposition of matter.
When you first add vegetable matter from the kitchen you can get a large number of fruit flies to decomposition of plant matter begins. Fruit flies lay their eggs on the fruit and vegetable waste. Its larvae feed on bacteria and fungi on decaying plant matter. A variety of small arthropods and insects, as create sowbugs cleaning cold composting piles. These insects feed on the bacteria and fungi that are present in the cold compost pile. Do not try to control these insects to insecticides as this interferes with the balance of the pile and slow down decomposition. These insects rate of decomposition of plant residues and grass clippings on the pile. Never put meat, fats or oils in your compost heap. They will rot and cause odors and attract flies and rodents home compaction.
